Creating Textured Backgrounds with Scrap Strips

For this challenge I was inspired by a project I’d seen in a catalogue that used three wide strips of patterned paper across the background to add both colour and texture. The sample used tone-on-tone papers with a softly watercoloured potted plant as the focal point.

Using Patterned Paper as a Background Element

I loved the idea of using patterned paper as a textured background element, so I decided to test the concept using pieces from my scrap stash.

A Simple Trick for Short Scrap Pieces

Of course, when you're working with scraps, the pieces you have aren’t always the right size. As I began laying out my background strips, I realised several of the papers I wanted to use were just a little too short.

That led to a small discovery.

Making Scraps Look Like Full-Length Panels

By trimming the strips strategically and positioning them so the ends disappeared behind the focal panel, I was able to create the illusion of longer pieces of patterned paper. It’s a simple trick, but it makes those awkward scraps much more usable.

Adding Colour with Watercolour Pencils

When it came time to film the video for this challenge, I decided to experiment with a variation of the idea. I reached for some purple-toned papers from my scrap pile after noticing I had a watercolour pencil in a similar shade that I hadn’t used much before.

One of the patterned papers included a beautiful multi-coloured floral design, which became the starting point for the colour palette. I pulled several of those colours into the focal image, building up the petals in soft layers using watercolour pencils. The gradual layering created a gentle depth that paired beautifully with the textured background.

In the video for Use Your Stash – Challenge #4, I share the full process for:

• turning scrap strips into a textured background

• the simple trick for making short scraps look like longer panels

• layering colour with watercolour pencils to build a soft floral focal point

A Second Card Variation

Below is the pink variation I mentioned in the video.

Creative Adjustments and Finishing Touches

The blue circle I shared that I had originally planned to use for the sentiment didn’t quite work the way I’d hoped, but it led to a happy little adjustment. I cut out the word “friend” and paired it with the “hello” in black on white that I had set aside from the purple version, creating a fun multi-coloured sentiment that worked beautifully with the brighter palette.

More Cardmaking Ideas Using Scraps

Next week’s challenge features the DIY patterned paper made from scraps that I experimented with earlier this week. It turned into a really fun way to use those tiny leftover pieces — you can catch the preview HERE.

Textured Backgrounds from Scrap Strips | Use Your Stash #4

March 20, 2026

One of the easiest supplies to build on in our stash?

Tone-on-tone patterned paper.

You know the ones — subtle prints, soft patterns, easy to overlook sometimes being almost too quiet to stand alone. But after this challenge, you’ll see they’re a deceptively powerful foundation for building a beautiful project.

For this challenge, I worked from an older catalogue inspiration piece and asked:

What if the background is the design feature?

Instead of using patterned paper as a small accent, I built the entire card front from layered square panels.

The design parameters:

- Use tone-on-tone patterns

- Keep the palette cohesive

- Let layering create interest instead of bold contrast

The result? A square card built from smaller square sections that create movement without overwhelming the eye.

For the first version, I stayed fairly close to the original colour story from the catalogue inspiration.

Why?

Because recreating something close to the source is often the best way to understand why it works.

This version helped me test proportions and experiment with spacing. It also allowed me to observe how subtle pattern differences create depth.

It became my “foundation version.”

In the video, I shifted the process slightly. Instead of starting with a fixed colour plan, I pulled tone-on-tone patterned papers from my stash and let them guide the direction.

That led to two blue variations:

A version built of soft, light blue tone-on-tone pattern squares on a misty moonlight base

And a dark navy blue with light blue pattern, on a base of lighter, balmy blue.

Both followed the same structural formula:

- Square panel background

- Layered florals

- Complementary sentiment panel

But the choice of decorative elements took each in very different directions. This was an intentional choice to inspire you to use what you already have on hand, whether that’s hand-stamped elements or florals fussy cut from patterned paper.

You can see the full decision-making process — including how each variation evolved — in the video below.

While filming, I wasn’t focused on perfect stamping technique. Instead, I talked through why I chose certain patterns and how I decided when a layer needed dimension.

Using your stash well isn’t about copying a finished card.
It’s about learning to read your supplies, build within gentle guidelines, and trust your eye.

Try it yourself — and as you do, pay attention to the decisions you’re making along the way.

If you’d like guidance through that process, the video walks through it step by step.

This is Challenge 2 of 8 in the Use Your Stash – Paper Scraps Edition series.

In Challenge 1, we focused on turning leftover scraps into cohesive layered designs. If you missed it, you can find that project here.

Next week, we’ll continue building on this foundation with a new creative constraint designed to stretch your stash in a different way.

The Crafty Carrot Co turned 4 this month and to celebrate our team shared a weekend of FREE live stamping video tutorials over on our public Facebook group.

For my party project, I chose to feature the Happiest of Birthdays Stamp Set (152539). Being a sentiment only set, I had to get creative with my other decorative elements. Join me in the replay to see this fun bubble background sponging technique come together. I also explore the idea of turning our beautiful designer series papers into fussy cut embellishments.

Throughout February, the team and I will be sharing 4 new LIVE tutorials in our exclusive, private Birthday Collection Facebook group. Learn how you can be a part of the fun and join here today: https://craftycarrotcollective.blogspot.com/

Making a project based on this tutorial? We'd love to see! Tag us @thecraftycarrotco when you post on your socials.

BONUS

I had such fun with this technique that I couldn't resist trying out an alternative colour combo. Here I've blended soft greens and blues with the 'Bubble Sponging Technique'. While I did a similar fussy cut technique to add a multi-toned sentiment as I did in the video tutorial, for this design I created my own stamped embellishment with the Dragonfly from the Dragonfly Garden Stamp Set (154411).

Thank you so much for stopping by. Inspired to try this technique? I’d love to see your take! Tag me @papercraftbyjenniferfrost

Every so often I change things up in class, moving away from greeting cards and giving participants a chance to try their hand at something different!  This month we made this Perpetual Calendar featuring the Share What You Love designer series papers.  Wanna peek inside? Of course you do!

Using patterned papers as a base for the calendar meant each page had a different look, even though two months share a panel (one front, one back).

We cycled through a series of embellishments for each page, some stamped and some fussy cut from the pretty papers themselves!

Despite being a very advanced project, the two new-to-class participants that joined the session for the first time did awesomely!

For a full look through this project, as well as a tutorial for putting one together yourself at home, see my YouTube video *HERE*

Many participants mentioned they would love to make more as gifts for friends and family!  So I thought it would be fun to share with them an idea for a matching gift card.  This project was inspired by the amazingly talented Jenni Pauli.

Could this little notecard be any more perfect for giving purpose to all those scrap pieces of patterned paper created in the making of a project such as this???

See how quick this is to put together for yourself *HERE*

It's Sale-a-bration time!  This large floral image is one of the exclusive sets on offer for free with qualifying product orders at the moment.  It's called Heartfelt Blooms and it's a bit special.  It's the very first new 'Disinktive' style rubber stamp.  It's uniquely made to lay down ink at different opacities to give a finished image that has a lot of depth, an almost photographic finish.

I came up with this design to share in class last month.  It's a sweet and simple card that shows off the 'one and done' stamping style of this set to advantage!

It was such a big hit in class that I wanted to make a video to share it with you all too!  As I was making the tutorial I adjusted the design a little, so now you have two versions to enjoy.

[VIDEO] Heartfelt Blooms

January 31, 2018

In November, I had the most amazing adventure overseas where I got to meet, laugh and craft with some of my favorite Stampin' Up! friends from around the world.  I wanted to make a small gift for the ladies, something handcrafted that had an Australian flavour to it.

To create the package I modified the measurements of my lidded gift box (see tutorial *HERE*) to create a smaller box.  I stamped the label detail and words from the Labels to Love stamp set.  The background gum nut image is an old stamp I picked up a long time ago and I've no idea of the brand but I just loved the Australian bush feel of it.

Inside I included a Caramello Koala, a fun sized Cherry Ripe and a sample of Vegemite (not pictured - we used up the last one on toast before I took my photos lol...)!

In the spirit of Australia Day, I'm sharing a little video from my kitchen today.  Cheese and Vegemite Scrolls are a favourite lunchbox snack here and I'd love if you gave this simple recipe a try for a little taste of Australia!

Supplies Used:
Stamps: Labels to Love
Inks: VersaMark, Garden Green
Papers: Whisper White, Sahara Sand, Early Espresso
Accessories/Tools: White Embossing Powder, Everyday Label Punch, Classic Label Punch, Burlap Ribbon, White Bakers Twine.
