This scrap paper card began with a challenge to "shop my stash" and quickly turned into a colourful handmade summer card inspired by sunshine, holidays and happy memories.

Summer Vacation Themed Card

The starting point for this project was the Shopping Our Stash "Summertime" challenge. I wanted to create something bright and cheerful while also making a dent in my ever-growing pile of leftovers. That's when the idea for a sunburst card background came to mind.

Scrap Patterned Paper Sunburst

The colour palette was inspired by the current challenge at All About papercraft challenges. I pulled together scraps in a range of oranges, yellow and blue tones and arranged them around the centre of the card. The combination immediately felt bright, playful and perfect for a summer card.

As with many creative projects, the card evolved as I worked. Once the sunburst was assembled, I added a small rectangular panel over the centre point. This not only covered the joins where all the paper scraps met, but also created the perfect place to build my focal cluster.

The finishing details were inspired by the Time Out vacation theme challenge. As soon as I started thinking about vacations and summertime adventures, I knew I wanted elements that reflected travel and memory-making. So I added a film frame die cut, a small sun embellishment and a camera image. Together, these elements reminded me of summer holidays, sightseeing adventures, taking photographs and capturing special moments with family and friends.

If you have a collection of patterned paper scraps sitting in your craft room, I encourage you to give this scrap busting card project a try. Sunburst backgrounds are surprisingly easy to create, work beautifully on a DIY greeting card, and can be adapted to suit almost any colour palette or theme.

#TGIFc72, Sketch Challenge, Day at the Beach, Layering Love, Stampin' Up!, Papercraft by Jennifer Frost

I'm dreaming of summer!  It's been a long, cold winter and I'm sure we have caught every bug making the rounds these past couple months.  I'm looking forward to the warmer weather and all the outdoor fun and adventures that come with it!  I have a little longer to wait, so in the meantime I'm making do with bringing a little sunshine to my craft desk instead!

Yesterday's Day at the Beach mini hop with fellow 'down under' Artisan's Jess and Susan, inspired me to again feature the gorgeous images from this fun set for today's TGIF sketch challenge.

I've matched them with the Layering Love sentiment, as well as bright daffodil yellow, flirty flamingo, sweet sugar plum and peekaboo peach tones.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this taste of summer. Be sure to head to the TGIF challenge page to see more fun sketch inspiration and play-along!

#TGIFc72 Day at the Beach

Day at the Beach, Places You'll Go, Stampin' Up!, Papercraft by Jennifer Frost, Watercolour for Cardmakers,

The South Pacific Artisans have conspired to bring you a mini blog hop today that showcases the fun Day at the Beach stamp set.  When I glimpsed this set in the holiday catalogue I added it to my order immediately!  I think it will be perfect for embellishing a scrapbook of our family holiday to sunny Queensland earlier this year, not to mention, great for beachy inspired cards like these ones here today.

For this first card I drew inspiration from our Queensland holiday.  I started with a piece of shimmery white cardstock, which I watercoloured with dapper denim and tempting turquoise.  I flicked quite a bit of water on the finished panel for a blotchy, under the sea type background.  I inked the Day at the Beach images with Classic Stampin' Pads and stamped them on shimmery card too, before clear embossing.  The embossing helped the colour stay sharp during the colouring process - no bleeding!

Day at the Beach, Sunburst Sayings, Stampin' Up!, Papercraft by Jennifer Frost, Watercolour for Cardmakers,

For my next project, I stamped the images in black on shimmery white before watercolouring.  I then fussy cut them and added them to a whisper white card base.  I added the Sunburst Sayings sentiment 'you brighten my day', it seemed like a wonderful fit for this bright summery scene.

Day at the Beach, Thoughtful Banners, Stampin' Up!, Papercraft by Jennifer Frost, Messy Watercolouring

In keeping with the little watercolouring theme I had going with these projects, I was inspired to try a little messy watercolouring by this card made by Debby at Lime Doodle Designs.  I stamped the images over a piece of shimmery white, added little hearts from the Places You'll Go set in the gaps between, then aqua painted.  Despite my
