After creating a bright and colourful sunburst card, I found myself wondering how the same technique might look with a softer colour palette, which led to today's tone on tone card featuring a playful paper pieced mermaid.

Bright Cardmaking Colour Palette

The jungle colour palette at As You See It Challenge features Coastal Cabana, a rich aqua blue. I decided to pair this bright tone with scraps of pool party to create a tone on tone sunburst. The result creates plenty of texture and visual interest while maintaining a calm, cohesive feel.

I love how a simple change in colour palette can completely transform a technique. The same sunburst background that felt bold and energetic in my previous project suddenly became elegant and serene. It's a wonderful reminder that colour choices play a huge role in shaping the mood of a handmade card.

Magical Day Mermaid

The layout for this project was inspired by a sketch challenge from Sunday Stamps. Once the background was complete, I began thinking about a focal image. Although I didn’t set out with a strict beach theme at the beginning, the colours and soft layered textures naturally steered the design in that direction, evoking calm seaside waters and coastal vibes. I wanted something playful, so I chose a mermaid image from my collection, which fits beautifully with the current Simon Says Stamp “At the Beach” challenge.

To colour the mermaid, I used a paper piecing technique, one of my favourite ways to use even the smallest paper scraps.

Tone on Tone Sunburst Background with a Paper Pieced Mermaid

June 24, 2026

Is there anything more creatively satisfying than taking a plain sheet of paper and turning it into something special?  Today, the Let's Get Hopping team are inspiring you to rock your cardmaking tools to make your own DIY backgrounds.  I've chosen to get messy with Brusho colour crystals to create this watercolour washed effect.

I started with panel of Shimmery White cardstock, brushed it lightly with water in my aqua painter and haphazardly sprinkled on yellows, reds and orange crystals.  Then I blended the colours and as it was drying, added a few more sprinkles of colour, leaving them to create the splatter detail.

Once it was dry, I left it under heavy books for a day or so to flatten out.  Then I had to decide what stamps to pair it with!  I went for the Fairy Celebration imagery in the end.  I felt like the shimmery, whimsical background worked well with this playful Fairy theme.  What stamps would you pair with a background like this?

Fairy Celebration, Peekaboo Peach, Watercolor, Stampin' Up!, Papercraft by Jennifer Frost

I love that the Global Design Project are featuring Stampin' Up!'s peach and tangerine tones in their challenge this week.  Orange is such a joyful, warm, vibrant colour!

I am not usually drawn to colour challenges but as soon as I saw this one I thought of the fun Fairy Celebration stamp set and couldn't resist having a play.

Birthday Card, Fairy Celebration, Fancy Friday, Succulent Garden DSP, Touches of Texture, Stampin' Up!, Papercraft by Jennifer Frost

No automatic alt text available.I'm really excited about today's Fancy Friday blog hop!  The team has been given a 'Step-It-Up' themed sketch challenge to share with you.  I love sketches, but I especially love seeing ideas for creatively taking a card design up a notch!

For my project today, I was inspired by some of my class participants who requested we make a shaker card when we meet next.  I immediately thought of this fairy from the Fairy Celebrations stamp set.  With a punch to match those lovely wings, it was a great fit for a shaker concept.  But a shaker card is advanced.  So first I put together a non-shaker version that let the image shine as intended!

For me, 'simple' means sticking to the basics - stamps, ink and a little paper. This card would be very easy to recreate with very few tools at home!

I've stamped the fairy in Memento Black on shimmery white card and then coloured with blender pens.  A shout out to the clever Paula Dobson who advised me to use blushing bride mixed with a touch of Coral Calypso for colouring skin tone - it worked a treat! Thanks Paula.  Do you have a favourite combination or a go-to trick for colouring skin? I'd love to hear from you!

Now to kick it up a notch...

Can you spot the differences??  This project has been stepped up with:

  • a hand stamped background as opposed to designer series patterned paper;
  • a die cut Stitched Framelits oval layer
  • a die cut Tags and Labels Framelit feature
  • wings punch cut to create a window for a shaker feature.
Now you must go and visit the next blog in this hop!  I just know this group of talented cardmakers is going to rock this challenge!!  Next up is my talented friend, Susan Wong.
